CreativeFIRE is based on creating and maintaining a portfolio career and the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement. I’ve have a portfolio career ever since I finished my degree in Illustration in 2000. I combined creating my own art to sell and undertook design / illustration commissions alongside teaching art and illustration in adult education settings and working in youthwork. At the time I didn’t even know that what I was actually creating was a portfolio career, and at that time it wasn’t really what I visioned for the future. I needed to earn money from commissions, teaching and youthwork while I built up my creative freelance career. It gave me options IF my freelance work wasn’t something I wanted to continue. It was only when I landed a full time job as a youthworker a few years later that I then started to miss the variety, freedom, creativity and independence that a portfolio career had offered and I had little energy for creating my own artwork.
