When I return to my parents’ house I’m always greeted with a drawing of a peregrine falcon that I drew and gifted to them in 2004. It’s framed and hung in the dining room and it marks a time in my life when I was working a number of jobs alongside prolifically producing and selling my artwork to raise money to renovate my first house. Subsequently much of what I produced in those years I sold and didn’t have chance to keep a visual record of – life moved too fast to keep up. Over the years my feelings towards this drawing have changed. The last 5 or 6 years I have moved from a complete disregard and disconnection to it (life had moved on and it was old traditional art) to looking forward to seeing it, like an old friend. I enjoy looking at it, including the poorly rubbed out mistakes which now makes me smile. It is the only surviving bird of prey drawing I created in that time and I thank my old self for giving it to my parents so I can still see it today.
